Virtual reality in online casinos

When people talk about technology in any aspect of the gaming industry, inevitably, they end talking about the future results of virtual reality, augmented reality, and any way in which they can create virtual worlds around them in the digital sphere. Online casino often adopts the latest technologies before standard gaming, due to the greater uptake of the audience and the ease at which it can be assimilated without a need for dependence on complex hardware or a heavy push to consumers. But how close are we to a fully virtual reality online casino?

Is AR Suitable for an Online Casino? u2a1o

Much in the same way that AR (Augmented reality) games are available for mobiles – Harry Potter and Animal Crossing AR games are set to properly roll out by the end of 2018 – using the direct environment and the digital world to create an immersive and atmospheric game, online casinos could benefit from AR technology. But developers have to be in tune with what players want.

A level of competitiveness could be incorporated to see how others are doing and where they roughly may be, but many players enjoy playing solo and having their own strategic thinking, so an AR experience could limit the options that players want – and could offer very little more than the standard mobile experience.

Live Dealers Show VR Promise 5x1n1p

The advent of the live dealers for online casinos, is probably the largest leap towards virtual reality. For example, William Hill offers live dealers for blackjack, roulette, and baccarat. The technology enhances the games and provides players with a new take on the classic, utilizing modern technology. Poker, especially, benefits from the interactive nature of the live dealers due to the interpersonal and social aspects involved in the game.

Live dealers prove to be successful and incorporate some of the aspects of augmenting reality, whereby things change in your direct environment as a result of the gameplay. But when it comes to online casinos, there should be smaller steps before a fully immersive experience is offered.

Will Consumers Adopt Virtual Reality? 4x1iq

Virtual Reality has been on the market in its truest sense since 2016 with the release of Oculus Rift. While the software and hardware were heavily lauded, there was a slower uptake than expected. It was in part due to the lack of others playing. But, there are roughly 171 million active VR s around the world in 2018 – compared to only 90 million in 2017 and 43 million in 2016.

The accessibility to VR has improved greatly – with costs to consumers and range of game and gameplay breaking barriers to entry. Given the rise in players being a spread of those most likely to be technologically minded and those in the ‘general adoption’ phase, there is no reason that when VR launches for online casino, that it won’t enjoy similar results.

So, while the online casino sector adopts the latest technologies, and will most likely adopt the VR trend just before it becomes the only way in which we will play, there is still some time off before developers get the VR casino right.
